Approaches:
Use the text as a vehicle for translation especially of all the different verb forms. Use the rhymes to help students learn the lyrics through listening.
This was written as a protest song against French military intervention in Vietnam but also references what happened to young French men in the Second World War. This is an opportunity for cross curricular work particularly with years 9 and 10 on war in France.

Rationale:
The text is simple and written in simple phrases. There is a lot of relevant language for GCSE, both in terms of grammar and vocabulary.
The pace of the song is very slow and accessible.

Outcomes:
Ability to translate.
Development of listening skills.
Writing their own protest letter to a politician using the same structures if different verbs.

Topics or themes:
This (together with Boris Vian's autobiography) can fit anywhere from year 9 onwards - you can even revise the members of the family!

Grammar:
Future/imperative/use of 'si'
