I am planning to use the poem within our topic “Places in town” in Year 6. It is a good starting point to introduce places and buildings and the structure gives the opportunity to learn the description of where we live. Other activities: we will sing the song version, manipulate the text, make a role-play, and create a short movie.
Rationale:
I would like to use this poem to show the children an authentic text, which is a very popular poem in Spain. Also, it illustrates how Spanish neighbourhoods are built up with a main square and important buildings around it. The poem is simple and the pupils will be able to understand it and even use it to make their own poems. There are opportunities to revisit grammar points.
Outcomes:
The pupils will make their own poems based on “La plaza tiene una torre” and will memorize the original one (easy with the song version), which will give them a feel of fluency.Other outcomes: a role-play between “la dama” and “el caballero” and a short movie illustrating the story of the poem.
Topics or themes:
It is a good starting point to introduce places and buildings and the structure gives the opportunity to learn the description of where we live.
Grammar:
Indefinite/definite article, adjective agreement, conjugation of “tener”, punctuation, prepositions (con)
Strategies:
This reinforces familiar language learning strategies: playing games, using their imagination, singing the song version, thinking of rhymes, similar words (torre-tower, flor-flower)
How much time required:
The poem will be part of the lesson for the duration of the half term: about 6 lessons
