Approaches:
We want the pupils to see that they can access quite easily a poem in Spanish and can decode it.
Visuals will be used to present key nouns; the powerpoint with sound will present an authentic Hispanic accent for them to listen to and to identify sound-spelling relationships. there will be a focus on articles, adjectival agreements and key sounds.
Activities will include whole class repetition of words; fly swat game;miming and team games for guessing;group work; use of dictionaries; discussions and decision-making in groups about categorising words;creation of own new phrases in Spanish; memorisation of parts of the poem; presentation to an audience
Rationale:
It is an authentic poem from a Chilean Nobel prize for Literature poet. It introduces a culture of an hispanic-speaking country rather than Spain. The words are quite simple but it is full of metaphors, enabling the pupils to build on the work they do in English lessins. It covers masculine, feminine, singular and plural articles in a natural way. It allows the pupils to be quite creative with phrases in language, linking with weather terminology that they will have covered in year 4. It also enables work to be done on sounds such as "h" "j" and "v"
Outcomes:
Pupils will encounter a poem from a great poet and be able to use their understanding of that to create and write their own poetic phrase.
Pupils will reinforce their understanding of articles in Spanish and learn the 4 forms of "the" and adjectival agreements
Pupils will be able to use a dictionary
Pupils will build on and consolidate their year 4 work in Spanish
Pupils will memorise sections of the poem and perform it to an audience
Topics or themes:
It is being used near the end of year 4 when they will have done work on weather words, seasons, colours, adjectival agreements and consolidates this in a creative way.
Grammar:
Grammar focus will be on masculine, feminine, singular and plural articles
Adjectival agreement
Phonics - specific sounds such as "h" "j" "v"
Strategies:
Identifying sound-spelling relationships
using a dictionary
revising months and seasons
sort words into categories
read and memorise words
How much time required:
6 lessons
